Colleen ATHPARIA - PIANO

Colleen Athparia, an internationally recognized pianist, has made an impressive career as both a solo and chamber musician, a renowned teacher, composer and recording artist with ten CDs to her name, including four exclusively of Canadian music, some of which were written for her.  She has toured as a performer and guest instructor from Mexico to Taiwan, Russia, Israel, Brazil and the Far East. A founding member of Calgary’s “Ensemble Resonance”, she has toured with this quartet including a performance in Carnegie Hall.

 Her musical roots can be traced to Toronto where as a student of Margaret Parsons-Poole she was awarded the gold medal and placed first in the Canadian Music Competition. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree with distinction from Indiana University, studying under the legendary pianist and pedagogue G.Sebok

As a dedicated teacher, her studio associated with Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary, features many extremely talented students, two of whom were listed recently in the CBC’s Top 30 Hot Classical musicians in Canada and one in BBC Music Magazine’s six best child-prodigies in 2016.

A Senior Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music since 1980, she has examined throughout N.America and presented Workshops on such topics as “Creative Practising”, “Beethoven and Chopin, seen through the eyes of their inspired Students”, and “Transforming the Mundane into Magic”.

Heralded by the National Post as one of the top four Canadian pianists of contemporary music and often a guest on CBC radio, Ms. Athparia was honoured in Ottawa in 2009 as one of the top 50 esteemed musicians in Canada. In 2017 she was awarded “RCM Teacher of Distinction for Alberta” as a leader in the field of music education.
