NAOMI WILLIAMS - VOICE & Musical Theatre
Naomi Williams (B.Mus, Honours Voice Performance, Laurier) has been teaching vocal students of all ages in classical, musical theatre, rock, and pop for over 20 years. She is the owner and operator of her micro-business, Good Vibrations Voice Studio (www.singwithgoodvibes.com) in Calgary, Alberta.
I could write a novel on all the ways I’ve tried, succeeded, and failed at singing from the moment I first started memorizing nursery rhymes, right up to belting out Top 40 hits to a ski lodge packed with families in Lake Louise, AB, on New Year’s Eve.
I’ve accepted that I’m in a committed, life-long relationship with the vocal instrument. Even though I’ve tried to quit it many times after it’s broken my heart, I’ve always found my way back to the next opportunity, the next lesson, and the next audition. My curiosity for how to help myself and others find freedom and joy in their vocal pursuits turned into a career I love
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from other voice teachers and singers who challenge, inspire, and lift each other up. I feel tapped into ‘what works’, and ‘in the know’ about what’s new. I’ve been so privileged to recently learn closely from incredible teachers like Rachel Brager-Goldenberg, Edrie Means Weekly, and Kari Ragan.
I’ve helped many people learn to find their voices and their courage. I’ve connected families through the joy of singing. I’ve brought sounds out of people they never even imagined they had inside them. I’ve lit a passion in young singers that put them on a life path just like my own - one where they are called to make singing and music their career.
I believe that the voices which are the most impactful come from humans who aim to be kinder and more considerate to others. They emanate from musicians who are open to learning how to listen more and to judge less.
The singers I have had the honour to teach are of differing ages, interests, and levels of performance. They know how to enjoy their accomplishments and celebrate others.
Festivals can be stressful - my aim as an adjudicator is to build an environment of self-respect and mutual admiration and to work from that place in every class. Remember that singing is, in essence, a Good Vibration!
